Check the sample against the whole room

Hold the sample upright near the intended wall and compare it with the furniture, flooring and curtains that will remain. Look at it from across the room as well as close up. A delicate print may disappear at normal viewing distance, while a bold motif can dominate a small space. Use daylight and evening lighting, noting reflections on textured or metallic finishes. Avoid sticking the sample with an untested adhesive.

Understand the pattern before ordering

Read the product details for repeat size, matching method, roll dimensions and installation requirements. Ask for a larger sample or room image if the supplied piece does not show a full motif. Make a rough paper layout of where major features might fall around a doorway or behind furniture, without treating that sketch as a final cutting plan. Different patterns can require different allowances, so use the supplier's calculation method rather than estimating from wall area alone.

Check practicality as well as appearance

Review the wallpaper's stated care and suitability for the room conditions. A sample's attractive finish does not automatically make it suitable for a splash-prone area. Ask about matching production batches when ordering and inspect rolls before installation. Keep the sample and product label together, along with any preparation or adhesive requirements. If the existing wall has damp, loose material or an unidentified coating, resolve that first; wallpaper should not be used to hide a substrate problem.

Before you call it done

  • View the sample at normal room distance.
  • Check the full pattern repeat and matching method.
  • Confirm room suitability and batch information.

Know the limit. Do not cover damp or unstable walls; installation and stripping methods depend on the existing surface.
