Disconnect according to the fittings
Turn off the supply and release pressure as the hose and nozzle instructions describe before disconnecting anything. Keep the nozzle pointed safely away from people and fragile objects. Do not pull a pressurised fitting apart by force.
Walk the hose route and free it from plant pots, furniture and sharp edges. Avoid yanking it around a corner or using the tap connection as an anchor point. Check for obvious damage while the length is accessible.
Let the hose guide the loops
Lay the hose on a clear surface and form broad loops without twisting it tighter. If a loop resists, ease the twist out rather than folding it into a kink. Follow the product's minimum bend or storage guidance where supplied.
For a reel, feed the hose evenly while watching for catches. Keep fingers clear of moving parts and do not use the reel handle to drag a snagged length across the garden. Stop and free the obstruction first.
Store for the conditions
Drain and protect the hose as its manufacturer recommends, particularly before freezing weather. Some expandable hoses have different care needs from standard hosepipe. Keep stored loops away from sharp tools and direct heat, and leave the connectors somewhere they will not be stepped on. Check the route is clear once the hose is put away.
Before you call it done
- Pressure has been released safely.
- The coil has no tight kinks or trapped twists.
- Connectors and walking routes are clear.
Know the limit. A garden hose is not necessarily approved for drinking water. Follow the product's intended use and local water-use restrictions.
