Reduce the load before looking

Remove bedding and, with suitable help, the mattress if the bed instructions permit safe access that way. Clear the surrounding floor and avoid leaning against an unstable frame. Note any damaged slat, missing support foot or joint that looks out of line. Do not get beneath a raised storage bed unless its instructions provide a safe maintenance procedure; gas-lift and folding mechanisms can move unexpectedly.

Use the assembly instructions as a map

Locate the frame model and check the specified fasteners and tightening sequence. On a sound ordinary frame, visible assembly bolts may need a careful check with the correct hand tool. Work gradually and do not overtighten timber connections. A bolt that will not snug up, a cracked component or a bent bracket is a repair issue. Avoid spraying oil into fabric-covered sections or inserting scraps between parts without understanding their intended fit.

Reassemble and listen during normal use

Make sure slats, centre supports and feet sit in their intended positions before replacing the mattress. Check that the frame is not rubbing against a skirting board or bedside cabinet. Restore the load with help and listen during ordinary movement. If the squeak persists, record its location and contact the manufacturer with photographs rather than repeatedly tightening every fixing. Keep the assembly guide and spare hardware together so later checks do not depend on guesswork.

Before you call it done

  • Inspect an unloaded frame where practical.
  • Check the intended centre supports and feet.
  • Use the manufacturer's fastener sequence.

Know the limit. Do not use a bed with cracked supports or work beneath an unsupported lifting mechanism.
