Finish unpacking before storing
Empty every pocket and check the lining for crumbs, damp clothing or small items. Clean the case according to its material and care instructions, then let it dry thoroughly with compartments open in a suitable place. Do not close a damp case and hope it will dry in storage.
Check wheels, handles and zips while the case is accessible. Note any repair needed before the next trip. Pulling hard on a caught zip can worsen a problem; clear trapped fabric gently and follow the manufacturer's repair guidance.
Use nesting only where it fits
A smaller empty case may fit inside a larger one, but do not force it against the lining or wheel housings. Protect surfaces from dirty wheels where necessary. Keep the combined weight manageable and make sure the outer case closes without strain.
If storing travel accessories inside, keep them in a simple labelled pouch and leave a short contents note visible. Avoid using a suitcase for documents, seasonal clothing or equipment that you will need before your next trip.
Choose an accessible, dry position
Keep the case away from damp walls and places subject to extreme conditions that the materials cannot tolerate. Heavy cases are better stored low than balanced above head height. Leave handles accessible and avoid stacking cases in a way that blocks another cupboard or an exit.
Before you call it done
- Pockets are empty and the lining is dry.
- Any stored accessories are clearly identified.
- The case can be retrieved without unsafe lifting.
Know the limit. Do not leave batteries or electronics in long-term luggage storage without following their manufacturers' storage instructions.
