Identify the product and expose its tab
Remove the hanging item first. Find the maker's removal instructions for the exact hook or picture strip, including whether a cover must slide off before the tab becomes accessible. Support the removable piece as directed without pushing it hard into the wall. Do not prise beneath the mount with a knife. If you cannot identify the adhesive system, do not assume that a visible tab behaves like a familiar brand's strip.
Follow the designed release movement
For a product that specifies stretch release, pull the tab slowly in its stated direction, keeping the movement close to the surface as instructed. Leave enough room for the full stretch and avoid jerking. Do not pull the hook itself out towards your body. Stop if the paint begins to lift or the tab tears; continuing with the wrong motion can turn a small problem into a much larger patch of damaged decoration.
Deal with failure using the maker's advice
If the tab breaks, consult the manufacturer's recommended recovery method instead of experimenting with heat, solvents or sharp tools. Those methods can be unsuitable for the wall finish or nearby fittings. After successful removal, inspect the surface gently and clean only with a compatible method. Do not reuse a single-use adhesive strip. Store a reusable hook body separately from worn adhesive, and keep replacement strips matched to the actual product rather than assuming every refill is equivalent.
Before you call it done
- Unload the hook before touching the adhesive.
- Read the exact removal direction and sequence.
- Use a fresh compatible strip for any refitting.
Know the limit. Do not use blades, solvents or heat on an unknown finish simply because an adhesive tab has broken.
